The C3 Aircross when first launched was only available with a manual gearbox, but now the automaker has added a 6-speed automatic variant to the line-up. How does it fare?

Since going on sale a few months ago, the Citroen C3 Aircross has had some ups and downs in terms of features, but one conspicuous absence was the availability of automatic transmissions. With the addition of the six-speed automatic versions to the lineup, this is now resolved. We quickly drove the updated model across the city to see how well it functions.


Citroen C3 Aircross Looks 

Nothing about the design has changed stylistically; not even an AT emblem to set it out from the manual version. We adore this classic Citroen SUV, which Seshan reported during his trip to Chennai. Its powerful posture and rather boxy shape speak more to purpose and utility than to frivolous appearances.

The cabin is also the same as other examples that we have seen. To put it another way, it’s functional in the sense that it only provides the bare minimum of features. Two new options that Citroen is now offering are pre-cooling the vehicle via the My Citroen App and remote engine start/stop. These will come in useful during the hot Indian months, especially as C3 Aircross is not equipped with temperature control. Since the feature needs the automobile and the app to sync post-registration with the relevant owner, I was sadly unable to observe how things worked.

The main benefit lies in its spaciousness. Three adults may fit on the back bench of the five-seater model, which has a roomy boot. Even though the last row is only used for kids on short trips, the 5+2 models maintain the same level of second-row room.

Citroen C3 Aircross Engine & Performance

The same 1.2-liter, 3-cylinder, 108-bhp petrol engine powers the C3 Aircross automatic. Even more drivability is provided by the engine’s six-speed torque converter transmission, which adds 15Nm of torque. There is quite little latency to be concerned about because the power supply is linear. We have always thought highly of this vivacious engine, and we still feel that way about the AT.

While there was room for improvement in terms of total noise level, Citroen should take another look at the NVH and cabin comfort. Put it in manual mode, and you can use the gear stick to handle the shifts easily. Paddle shifters are not present (wishful thinking!). When operating in manual mode, it smoothly reaches a rev limiter and then chooses the next gear on its own.

Similar to the manual version, the automatic-only experiences some difficulty at the high end of the torque range. The torque at the bottom end is strong, and the acceleration is decent even in the mid-range. Convenience-wise, the C3 Aircross is a great combination whether traveling on the roads or in urban areas. The handling and ride quality is excellent. Regardless of the weight, it cushions every jolt. Furthermore, I will give this an A+ in the handling category. It so provides for an excellent driving experience when there is a reliable automatic and the drive quality is this compliant. I will always be content when operating a C3 Aircross.

Citroen C3 Aircross Verdict

To be honest, the Citroen C3 Aircross AT is a really good option for anyone searching for a roomy, no-frills vehicle. There is a significant price increase, but the features list and whole cabin experience might have been much better. This implies that you will have more alternatives to consider, but if you don’t mind paying a little extra for an aftermarket add-on later on and are content to receive a nice mechanical package, give this one careful consideration.
